Paul Ekman, a professor at the University of San Francisco and the foremost researcher
in the field of facial expressions, believes most facial expressions are blends of several feelings.

As a result, they are by far the most difficult of nonverbal messages to understand clearly.
There are a wide range of facial expressions from a simple lip movement to the raising of the

brows and shifting of the gaze. Some facial expression shaves a lot of power. A smile, for
example, makes any situation easier to handle. Anger, happiness, worry, anxiousness, despair,

and boredom are just some of the emotions and sentiments that maybe expressed through non-
verbal signals, such as facial expressions. Non-verbal clues such as a smile, a frown, a grin, or a
blank assist us to read and decipher read emotions and feelings.

While our reaction and adaptability to new events maybe perceived by facial expressions in a

face-to-face conversation, facial emotions can also be faked. The diagram below depicts numerous
facial expressions as well as the emotions they represent.
