the flow of a conversation. Perhaps more importantly, nonverbal communication plays an
important role in relational communication and identity expression.

               Some functions of nonverbal communication:

                1. Accenting

Accenting draws attention to a key part of the message. When you add an accent to something,
you add emphasis to it, making it stand out by amplifying it.

                2. Moderating

Moderating is the inverse of accenting in that it seeks to diminish attention by removing
emphasis and distorting or attenuating it in various ways to make it more difficult to understand.

                3. Complementing

Complementing is similar to accenting, but it encompasses a broader range of the message. It
ensures that all speech is accompanied by nonverbal communication that corresponds to what
               is being said.

                4. Substituting

Substituting is the use of nonverbal language to replace words. There are times when nonverbal

communication is way superior. Sometimes there are things that are best left unsaid.
Sometimes the raising of an eyebrows speaks volumes.

                5. *Regulating

Nonverbal communication can be used to regulate the speech / conversation. A common
application is at the beginning and end of a speech. It can also be used to control other people's

speech by signalling that you want them to stop speaking so you can speak.

3.7.5. TIPS FOR IMPROVING NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

 Over the course of a work week, pay close attention on how you use your body
language. In meetings, casual conversations, and presentations, pay attention to your
body language, facial expressions, and posture. Examine how people react to your

                       natural nonverbal communication.
